The Owner’s Cottage
at Huka Lodge sits on an elevated and sunny promontory above
the Waikato
River, within the grounds
of Huka Lodge. Virtually completely hidden from view,
this luxurious hideaway enjoys stunning views downstream
to the mighty Huka
Falls.
The picturesque wooden cottage was originally built in 1937,
for Americans Commander and Mrs. Fitzhugh Green of Long Island,
on land leased from Alan Pye.
Four spacious guest suites are anchored by a central living room,
dining area, kitchen and a den. The colour palette
is deliberately muted with elegant use of soft cream hues for
the walls and bleached Oak wooden parquet floors throughout.
This all contributes to an ambience of calm restful relaxation
within the cottage.
The suites all have super-king
size beds, crisp cotton bed linen, and soft feather and down
pillows, and comfortable chairs for
lounging. All suites enjoy
the romance of their own fireplace.
Each suite also has a magnificent ensuite bathroom – twin
basins, bath as well as a shower and the comfort of under-floor
heating. The cathedral style ceiling and generous use of glazing
means the bathrooms enjoy great natural light levels.
Two of the guest suites face the river while
the other two enjoy a beautiful private courtyard garden aspect.
These gardens also feature
one of the magnificent outdoor fireplaces that can be found tucked
away within the environs of Huka Lodge. All the suites offer every
comfort and that attention to detail that has become a Huka Lodge
trademark.
The Living Room is the centre of the cottage
with magnificent stone fireplace for blazing log fires, high
ceilings, cream suede
couches, antique leather club chairs – everything you need
to absolutely relax.
All the rooms are used to display works by
some of New Zealand’s
foremost artists – Max Gimblet, Mervyn Taylor, Don Binney,
Paul Dibble and Dick Frizell to name a few. The Owner’s
Cottage at Huka Lodge is furbished generously with characterful
pieces chosen for their comfort, beauty and history like the
wonderful 1920s French Oak chairs in the living room.Should you
choose to dine in the cottage, the dining table within the Living
Room seats 8, however you may take the secret
path through the grounds to the main Lodge and dine there instead.
A well-equipped kitchen also allows for a Huka Lodge chef to
cook for you or you may also choose to self cater. The options
are all available. The kitchen has a gas hob, electric stove,
microwave and refrigerator/freezer with icemaker.
The Den has a workstation
featuring desk with computer and printer. Other diversions include
plasma – screen
television and a DVD player, extremely comfortable leather chairs
and a cozy
fireplace complete the picture.
A large outdoor deck extends in a continuous line from the living
room until it meets the amazing cantilevered infinity pool. The
water line blends seamlessly back into the Waikato River beyond
and the effect is breathtaking.
Yet another timbered deck at a lower level
has a heated spa pool and you will find plenty of outdoor furniture
suitable for dining,
sunbathing, reading or a quiet nap.
Should you be traveling with staff, provision has been made for
two escort rooms with ensuite bathrooms designed for single occupancy.
The Owner’s Cottage also has full laundry
facilities should you wish to use them however you are also able
to call Housekeeping
at Huka Lodge should the need arise.
The Owner’s Cottage at Huka Lodge offers the best of both
worlds – a high level of privacy and independence as well
